The fine art photography of
Bob Hills

Bob Hills' stunning black & white photographs of Southern Utah's slot canyons
- Antelope Canyon, Bull Valley Gorge and Round Valley Draw - have been
selected for inclusion by the prestigious LensWork Magazine for an upcoming
issue. LensWork is considered by many photographers to be the premiere
black and white photography publication in the country. Featured here are
just 15 of the 48 photographs submitted by Bob Hills to the magazine.
(Mr.
Hills will lead a one-day photography field trip to these or similar areas in
June. Please visit our
Workshop page for more details.)

Artist Statement

I have BFA and MFA degrees from Utah State University and 39 years of
photographic experience.  It's been my privilege to exhibit one-man shows at the
Kimball Art Center in Park City, Utah, the Springville Museum of Art in
Springville, Utah and twice in the Brigham City Museum/Gallery in Brigham City,
Utah. And, I've been the recipient of several photographic awards in
competitions.

While many artists get philosophical to the extreme, I simply strive to create
images that are pleasing, inspiring, or intriguing - a visual treat for the eye and
soul.  There are no hidden meanings or political agendas to my work.  The
photographs must speak for themselves.

I tend to see almost all subject matter in the abstract. In many cases the subject
matter is only incidental to the art.  I try to compose my photographs in a way that
will unveil the strongest image with the most interest. It is mainly an exercise in
eliminating the superfluous.  In any case, I feel I'm on a constant hunt for
monuments in the mountains, treasures in the trees and diamonds in the dirt. It's
exciting.

Once a photographer "knows" his or her photographic tools, and has acquired
an understanding of the medium's strengths, as well as its limitations, the artist is
free to feel, to concentrate on the bare essence of art ..... and good things can
happen.
